Doesn’t science disprove God, or contradict the Bible?

Science and faith are often presented as natural enemies. Historically, and even logically, that’s not quite right — modern science largely grew up inside a Christian view of the world, and the two are answering different kinds of questions in the first place.

Scripture invites investigation — it doesn’t fear it

If Christianity actually feared careful examination of the natural world, its own Scriptures would be an odd place to find this kind of encouragement.

“It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.”

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion? Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?”

Job 38:31–33 (ESV)

God’s own response to Job walks through the intricate order of the cosmos, not as a warning to stop looking, but as a display of wonder Job is invited to consider. A universe with real, discoverable order is exactly the kind of universe worth investigating scientifically.

Two kinds of explanation, not two competing ones

Oxford mathematician John Lennox — who has publicly debated prominent atheists including Richard Dawkins and the late Stephen Hawking — makes this point with a simple illustration he returns to often, including in his book Can Science Explain Everything?: why is the kettle boiling?

That’s the scientific explanation. Another answer: “because I want a cup of tea.” That’s a personal, purpose explanation. Both are completely true at the same time. They don’t compete with each other — they belong to different categories of explanation entirely, and answer different questions.

Lennox’s point is that this is exactly the shape of the science-and-God question. “How” questions (mechanism, process, physical cause) and “why” questions (purpose, agency, meaning) aren’t rivals fighting over the same territory. A complete scientific account of how the universe works no more rules out a Creator behind it than a complete account of how a car engine works rules out the idea that someone designed and built the car.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created… And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

“In him all things hold together” is arguably a description of what scientists later came to call the laws of nature — the reason the universe behaves consistently enough to be studied at all.

This isn’t new — many founders of modern science were devout believers

Historically, modern science largely developed among people who believed the universe was made by one rational Creator and therefore ran on consistent, discoverable laws — not the whims of many competing, capricious gods. A few examples, with what’s actually documented in their own words:

Galileo Galilei (1564–1642)

Known for: pioneering the telescope’s use in astronomy and defending the heliocentric (sun-centered) model of the solar system.
“The intention of the Holy Spirit is to teach us how one goes to heaven, not how heaven goes.”

A devout Catholic throughout his life, Galileo argued that Scripture and scientific discovery couldn’t genuinely conflict, since both ultimately come from the same God — but that the Bible’s purpose is spiritual, not a manual for astronomy.

Isaac Newton (1642–1727)

Known for: the laws of motion and universal gravitation, laid out in the Principia Mathematica (1687).
“This most beautiful System of the Sun, Planets, and Comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being.”

Newton wrote more on theology than on physics across his lifetime, and clearly saw the order of the cosmos as evidence of an intelligent Designer. Worth noting honestly: his own private theological views were unorthodox — historians of his writing document that he rejected the doctrine of the Trinity, a position that puts him outside historic Christian orthodoxy on that specific point, even as he remained a fervent believer in a personal, governing God.

Johannes Kepler (1571–1630)

Known for: the three laws of planetary motion, foundational to modern astronomy.
Often quoted as saying his scientific work meant “thinking God’s thoughts after him.”

Kepler saw his astronomy as an act of worship — uncovering the mathematical order God had built into creation.

Robert Boyle (a founder of modern chemistry), Michael Faraday (electromagnetism), James Clerk Maxwell (electromagnetic theory), and Gregor Mendel (the Augustinian friar whose work founded modern genetics) are further widely-documented examples of scientists whose Christian faith sat comfortably alongside their scientific work, not in tension with it.

The Bible was never meant to be a science textbook

Galileo’s point above touches something worth explaining directly: why doesn’t the Bible read like a modern scientific document?

“All Scripture is breathed out by God…”

2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

“Breathed out” describes something different from dictation. Scripture’s own account of its own writing (2 Peter 1:21) describes human authors “carried along” by the Holy Spirit — meaning God worked through real people, in their own genuine voice, vocabulary, and cultural setting, rather than mechanically transcribing words to a passive scribe. That’s why each biblical book still reads like its actual human author: Paul’s letters sound like Paul, the Psalms read like Hebrew poetry, Luke’s careful historical method (Luke 1:1–4) reads like a first-century historian’s. The divine and human authorship work together, not one erasing the other.

One practical result: Scripture routinely describes the physical world the way any ordinary observer of any era would describe it — the sun “rising,” for instance — because its purpose was never to deliver a technical scientific model to its first readers. Its purpose, consistently, is to reveal God and his plan of salvation. Measuring the Bible against a standard it never claimed for itself — precise, modern scientific description — is asking it to answer a question it wasn’t written to answer.

When science actually illuminates the Bible, rather than undermining it

It’s worth noting the relationship isn’t always adversarial — sometimes careful field study has done the opposite of casting doubt on a Gospel account.

“Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.”

Without a microphone or amplifier, how could one voice possibly reach a crowd described elsewhere as numbering in the thousands? A 1976 acoustical study by B. Cobbey Crisler, published in the journal Biblical Archaeologist, examined a cove on the Sea of Galilee’s shoreline near Capernaum — sometimes called the Cove of the Sower — and found that its natural, horseshoe-shaped hillside, combined with the flat water surface reflecting sound outward, could carry a speaker’s voice from a boat to a crowd of several thousand people gathered on the slope above. Rather than a detail science casts doubt on, this is a case where the physical geography actually explains, with real precision, how the scene described in Mark 4 was genuinely possible.

None of this settles every specific debate — Christians themselves hold a range of views on questions like the age of the earth or the exact mechanics of biological origins, and those disagreements exist within orthodox faith, not as a threat to it. What the broader pattern shows is that science and Christian faith were never the natural enemies the “conflict” narrative assumes; historically and logically, they’ve fit together far more often than they’ve collided.

Hard questions

Doesn’t evolution disprove the Genesis creation account?

This is genuinely debated among Christians who take Scripture seriously, not settled by a single obvious answer — views range from young-earth creationism to old-earth creationism to evolutionary creationism, each held by thoughtful believers wrestling honestly with both the biblical text and the scientific evidence. What isn’t in question across all these views is the core theological claim Genesis actually makes: that God is the ultimate source and purpose behind whatever process produced the world we see, however that process worked in detail.

Aren’t miracles inherently unscientific?

Science, by its own working method, studies repeatable natural causes — which means it’s simply not designed to rule miracles in or out; that’s outside its scope, not a finding within it. A miracle isn’t a violation of “science” so much as a claim that, on a specific occasion, God acted directly rather than only through the ordinary regularities science normally studies. Whether that happened in a given case is a historical question, weighed by evidence and testimony, not something a lab experiment can settle either way.

If science can eventually explain something, doesn’t that make God unnecessary for that explanation?

This is sometimes called the “God of the gaps” problem, and it’s worth taking seriously — using God merely to plug whatever science hasn’t explained yet is a genuinely weak position, since the gap keeps shrinking as knowledge grows. But that’s not really the argument being made here. The claim isn’t “God explains what we don’t yet understand mechanically” — it’s that God is the reason there’s a universe with mechanisms, laws, and order to understand at all. A fuller scientific explanation of how something works doesn’t touch that deeper question of why there’s anything working, in an orderly way, in the first place.
